As feeling safe while occupying your home is fundamental to your mental well-being, it is worth focusing on the vulnerable entry points. These are normally the front and back doors plus windows at the rear of the house on the ground floor. First floor windows when accessible from a kitchen or garage roof will also require your attention.
However, most intruders want to know how they are going to get out quickly in the event of an emergency and this is the main reason why they prefer doors. This is where you should focus most of your attention.
ENTRANCE DOOR SECURITY
An investment in secure doors and windows is worth considering, as it solves this problem while also securing your valuables when the house or bungalow is unoccupied.
FRONT DOOR SECURITY
The most secure standard for doors is IS EN 1627 which is a higher level than PAS 24, and points to installing powder-coated galvanised steel frames – the steel provides both rigidity and the casing for an inaccessible multi-point locking system. These doors can be fitted with timber faces and
laminated glass. Link to Doors page on website.
SLIDING DOOR SECURITY
Sliding doors can be lifted out of their tracks and it pays to install a secondary lock so as you are not entirely dependent on the door’s locking mechanism to keep you safe.
When concerned about the glass being broken you can install retractable window grilles. link to Grilles page on website
FRENCH DOOR SECURITY
Almost all French doors in Ireland are outward-opening which makes them easier to access by prying-open or undermining the locking system and so it’s a good idea to have a secondary security device such as the Burglarybuster 1, in place to act as a last line of defence. Link to www.zentry1.co.uk
Again, when concerned about the glass being broken to gain access you can install retractable window grilles. In warm summer months many windows in bungalows are often left open for ventilation purposes. Again, window grilles can be considered here. link to Grilles page on website.
